                          2012 Race Directors Needed!!

                          Update 1/31/12
SERR is looking for race directors for the following races. It's an easy way to give back to your running community, and it's fun!

Flanagan's Run March 17 - This is a winter tradition, a great way to add some variety to the monotony of winter running. Don't let this fun tradition die!

Windfall Lake Challenge July 7th, 2012 - Juneau's most adventurous and challenging trail run. From the end of Montana Creek Road, through Montana Creek Trail to Windfall Lake Trail Head.

Only Fools Run at Midnight June 30, 2012 - This is Juneau's largest and wackiest run. Help SAIL raise funds to continue to support Seniors and people who experience disabilities.

                          Into Barefoot Running?

                          Posted 11/29/11
I do freelance writing in Juneau and I was thinking of writing an article on barefoot running for the Empire, but I wanted to check first to see if there are people who even do that in Juneau...If you happen to run barefoot, or are into minimalist running, it would be great to talk! Any assistance is much appreciated! Feel free to email me at jennifer.nu@gmail.com.

                          Cheers,
                          Jennifer

Girls on the Run® Southeast Looking for Volunteer Coaches!

Girls on the Run® Southeast is seeking volunteer coaches at new and established sites throughout Juneau to run its twelve-week program. Girls on the Run® is a national experiential learning program for girls in grades 3 through 5. Although its perceived goal is completion of a noncompetitive 5K, in fact GOTR® is as much about good health, friendship, positive body image and self-esteem as it is about running.

It was designed to help 8- to 14-year-old girls before they encounter what Molly Barker, the founder of GOTR®, calls the “girl box”—that place where society, peers, even parents inadvertently direct so many girls, a place where they think they are judged on a superficial level only. Barker explains, “As they approach their teens, girls often lose their tomboyish personalities and become more self-critical and depressed.” Through its focus on positive emotional, social, mental and physical development, GOTR® helps more than 100,000 girls gain a strong sense of self as they enter adolescence.

Currently in Juneau there are 4 sites (Harborview, Gastineau, Mendenhall River, and Auke Bay), with 60 girls participating. The GOTR® curriculum is based on extensive research and “on-the-track” testing of lessons. Each lesson includes a “getting on board” exercise, a warm-up activity, a stretch routine with question and answer time, a workout with a team goal, a cool-down and stretch with additional question and answer time, and a closing cheer or words of encouragement. In addition, each group performs a community service project of their own design.

Coaches attend a one-time training and are provided detailed lesson plans. They do not have to be runners themselves; the only requirement is that they be enthusiastic and committed to the healthy development of young girls. Groups meet twice a week for 60 minutes.

For more information on Girls on the Run®, including how to volunteer, contact Ati Nasiah, director of Girls on the Run® Southeast, at (907)586-6623.
